The Change & Impact Continuing Education Program in partnership with the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences was provided regional speech-language pathologists a no-cost, program on stuttering entitled, “School-Age Children Who Stutter: Assessing & Treating the Impact on Their World.” Attendees earned continuing education units (CEUs) while hearing from international thought leader and stuttering expert, Dr. Joseph Donaher and Meg Shake, MS, CCC-SLP who was Kidd-Gilchrist’s speech-language pathologist during his time at the University of Kentucky (UK).
“Giving back to the community through educational opportunities in stuttering is very important to me and my foundation, Change & Impact. Speech-language pathologists play such a big part in the life of a person who stutters,” said Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. “I’m grateful to be back, to meet so many dedicated SLPs, and to share my story where my speech therapy journey began with Ms. Meg Shake.”
In a full-circle moment, Kidd-Gilchrist delivered a keynote address alongside Shake, reflecting on his personal experiences receiving speech therapy at UK and the life-changing impact it had on his journey as a person who stutters.
“Working with Michael years ago was a turning point in my career, inspiring me to become a better therapist for people who stutter and a louder advocate for them in their schools, jobs, and communities,” said Meg Shake, M.S., CCC-SLP and Speech-Language Pathologist at the Outpatient Speech-Language Pathology Clinic at UK HealthCare. “Working on this event has brought back many great memories of that incredible and challenging year. I am excited to help teach a wider community of stuttering therapists, and I am so grateful for the opportunity.”
